The Present Simple Tense

The Present Simple Tense is used to talk about something in general. We usually use this tense to describe something and to say how often things happen.

Examples:

  • The Earth goes round the Sun.
  • People like to relax on Sundays.
  • This restaurant opens at 7am.
  • We go on holiday in June.
  • I often drink coffee in the morning.

FORMATION:

Affirmative:

  1. I go . 1. We go
  2. You go 2. You go
  3. He/She/It goes 3. They go

  1. I don’t go 1. We don’t go
  2. You don’t go 2. You don’t go

As you probably noted, we use the auxiliary verb DO to form questions and negatives in the past simple tense. However, sometimes the verb DO can also be the main verb. For example:

  • What do you do? (What is your profession?)
  • My brother is very lazy. He doesn’t do anything the whole day.

There are three auxiliary verbs in English language that are used in forming tenses: BE, DO and HAVE.

Please note: The verb TO BE uses different forms when it comes to forming questions, affirmatives and negatives.
